The digital payment revolution is here, and it’s led by none other than Apple Inc.’s Apple Pay. With its seamless integration of advanced NFC and biometric authentication technology, Apple Pay is the ultimate solution for secure, effortless transactions.
However, in the midst of this technological transformation, there is one major retailer that remains uninterested: H-E-B.

What is Apple Pay?
Apple Pay is a cutting-edge payment platform that enables users to make transactions using their Apple devices such as iPhones, iPads, and Apple Watches. The NFC and biometric authentication technologies guarantee secure transactions, allowing shoppers to complete their purchases without the hassle of typing in their credit card information or handling cash. Setting up Apple Pay is an easy process, and can be done quickly through the Wallet app on your Apple device.
Why doesn’t H-E-B accept Apple Pay?
In contrast to the growing trend of merchants who are eager to adopt digital payment methods, H-E-B has yet to include Apple Pay as a payment option. This may come as a disappointment to those looking for a quick and effortless way to pay, but H-E-B does offer alternative payment options such as credit and debit cards.
H-E-B confirmed their decision on Twitter. A spokesperson wrote, “While we don’t have Apple Pay, we are doing a number of things to minimize contact at register, including eliminating the screen touch to confirm your payment amount and the need to sign for your purchase.”
We appreciate your feedback on payment options, and while we don’t have Apple Pay, we are doing a number of things to minimize contact at register, including eliminating the screen touch to confirm your payment amount and the need to sign for your purchase.

H-E-B didn’t share why they don’t offer Apple Pay. They only shared that they don’t.
Many grocery stores, like Kroger and Walmart, have chosen to develop and invest in their own payment solutions, like Kroger Pay and Walmart Pay, instead of accepting Apple Pay. This decision allows grocery stores to have better analytics of what products shoppers frequently buy together, making price promotions and bulk upsells more effective to drive higher transaction amounts.
Grocery stores can also batch process multiple daily transactions for one shopper, such as buying groceries and then filling up their gas tank before leaving the parking lot. Batch processing these transactions cuts down on credit card fees for the grocery store, thereby reducing costs and the need to raise prices.
Can I use Apple Pay in-store at H-E-B?
Regrettably, H-E-B’s lack of support for Apple Pay means that it’s currently not possible to use the service in-store.
Apple Pay can not be used for gas at the H-E-B pump either.
However, customers who prefer to use Apple Pay can still do so at other participating merchants.
What about the H-E-B app?
Apple Pay is not an option in the H-E-B app, H-E-B Go, either, leaving customers who enjoy online grocery shopping with the need to resort to alternative payment methods like credit and debit cards.
Final thoughts
Although H-E-B has yet to hop on the Apple Pay bandwagon, the retailer does provide alternative payment options. The growing trend of merchants embracing digital payments suggests that H-E-B may eventually follow suit.
In the meantime, customers who prefer the convenience and security of Apple Pay can still enjoy it at other participating merchants. Whether it’s in-store or through the app, Apple Pay offers a seamless, secure way to make transactions with ease.
